Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy or CBT

CBT is a practical form of psychotherapy that has been shown in numerous research studies to be effective in treating anxiety and mood disorders. The therapist helps clients overcome symptoms and improve overall functioning by developing skills to cope with the thoughts and behaviors that maintain their problems. John is also trained in a form of CBT called Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or DBT. DBT emphasizes skills including mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Compared to other forms of psychotherapy, CBT is goal-oriented, present-focused, and collaborative. The client and therapist collaborate on forming specific therapy goals. Given its focus on symptom reduction, it is a shorter term form of talk therapy.
